Hogwarts Legacy 2 Linked to Harry Potter HBO Series
Warner Bros. has exciting news for fans of the magical world of Harry Potter: the sequel to the blockbuster game *Hogwarts Legacy* will intertwine with the eagerly awaited Harry Potter TV series set to premiere on HBO. Dive deeper to explore how these two major projects will create a cohesive narrative universe.
Hogwarts Legacy Sequel to Share “Big Picture Storytelling Elements” with Harry Potter TV Series
Warner Bros. Interactive has officially announced that the sequel to Hogwarts Legacy, a game that sold over 30 million copies since its launch in 2023, will feature direct narrative ties to the upcoming Harry Potter TV series on HBO, slated for a 2026 debut.
"We have known for some time that fans are looking for more things in this world, and so we’re spending a lot of time thinking about that," said David Haddad, president of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, in an interview with Variety. He highlighted the collaborative efforts with Warner Bros. Television to ensure a seamless narrative connection between the game and the TV series. Despite the game being set in the 1800s, far before the timeline of the series, it will share thematic and "big-picture storytelling elements" with the new show.
Details about the HBO series remain limited, but Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO & Max Content, has promised that the series "will dive deep into each of the iconic books that fans have continued to enjoy for all of these years." This ambitious project aims to revisit and expand upon the rich tapestry of stories already explored in books, films, and countless fan fictions.
The challenge lies in blending the game's unique identity with the series in a way that feels organic and avoids forced connections. With the significant time gap between the game's setting and the series, fans eagerly await how new lore or secrets about Hogwarts and its alumni will be unveiled through this collaboration.
Haddad confidently noted that the success of Hogwarts Legacy has reignited interest in the franchise across various platforms. "The rest of the company was very curious about what we helped to unlock with ‘Hogwarts Legacy’ last year," he remarked.
It's crucial to mention that J.K. Rowling, the creator of the Harry Potter series, will not be directly involved in managing the franchise. Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) will keep her informed through her literary agent, but as Robert Oberschelp, head of global consumer products at WBD, told Variety, "If we’re going to ever go beyond a canon conversation, we make sure that we’re all comfortable with what we’re doing."
Rowling's controversial statements have led to calls for boycotts of Hogwarts Legacy, with many fans expressing their dissent through their purchasing decisions. Despite these efforts, the game achieved immense commercial success, outpacing even legendary titles like GTA San Andreas and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. Fans can rest assured that Rowling's exclusionary views will not influence the narrative of the game or the upcoming HBO series.
Hogwarts Legacy 2 Release Date Expected Near Harry Potter HBO Series Debut
Warner Bros. is targeting a 2026 or 2027 launch for the HBO series, suggesting that the Hogwarts Legacy sequel will not be released before that timeframe. Gunnar Widenfels, CFO of Warner Bros. Discovery, emphasized the importance of the sequel, noting, "Obviously a successor to Hogwarts Legacy is one of the biggest priorities in a couple of years down the road."
Given the development time needed for a sequel to such a monumental game, industry analysts at Game8 predict a release window of 2027 to 2028 for Hogwarts Legacy 2.
