Jack Wall on Mass Effect 3 Fallout: 'Part of the Deal'

Author : Layla Update : Dec 31,2025

Composer Jack Wall recently explained why he didn't return to score Mass Effect 3, despite creating the beloved soundtracks for the first two installments.

Wall collaborated with developer BioWare to craft the '80s-inspired sci-fi scores for 2007's Mass Effect and its 2010 sequel. Mass Effect 2 is widely regarded as one of the greatest action RPGs ever made, with Wall's powerful "Suicide Mission" composition often praised as a series highlight.

Fans were surprised when Wall didn't contribute to 2012's Mass Effect 3. In a recent Guardian interview, he revealed the departure stemmed from a disagreement with then-development lead Casey Hudson.

"Casey wasn't particularly pleased with me by the end," Wall shared. "But I remain incredibly proud of that score. It received a BAFTA nomination and performed exceptionally well... even if it didn't fully meet Casey's expectations."

The Guardian characterized the situation as "creative tension" between Wall and Hudson, though Wall remained diplomatic. "Professional disagreements happen—it's part of the industry," he noted. "This was one of the few times in my career it occurred, and while challenging, you move forward."

Wall offered more insight into the intense development of Mass Effect 2, particularly the "Suicide Mission" sequence, which may shed light on his working relationship with Hudson.

"It was the most mentally demanding project I've ever undertaken," Wall recalled. "With the team focused on finishing the game, I had limited guidance. They had to extensively adapt my submission, but their work created one of gaming's most memorable finales. The effort was absolutely worthwhile."

Following Mass Effect 2, Wall contributed to various Call of Duty titles, including the recent Black Ops 6. BioWare is currently developing the next Mass Effect game after Dragon Age: The Veilguard, though the composer has not yet been announced.
