James Gunn Unveils First Look at Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow
Excitement is building as DC's next major film, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, has officially started production. To mark this milestone, DC Studios head James Gunn took to Bluesky to share the first glimpse of Milly Alcock as Supergirl. While it's not a full costume reveal, the photo of Alcock in her actor's chair is a thrilling tease for fans eager to see her take on the iconic role of Kara Zor-El.
Gunn expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "Thrilled to see camera roll at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden on Supergirl, with Craig Gillespie at the helm and the phenomenal Milly Alcock as our Kara Zor-El." This confirms that Craig Gillespie, known for directing Cruella and I, Tonya, will be steering the ship for this much-anticipated film, as previously reported in April.
While details remain scarce, it's known that Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow draws heavily from the acclaimed graphic novel by Tom King, Bilquis Evely, and Ana Nogueira. The story follows an alien girl named Ruthye Marye Knoll, who seeks Supergirl's help to avenge her father's murder by the villain Krem of the Yellow Hills. This compelling narrative earned a nomination for "Best Limited Series" at the 2022 Eisner Awards and is highly recommended for those yet to explore it.
The cast is shaping up to be stellar, with Matthias Schoenaerts set to portray Krem, and Eve Ridley taking on the role of Ruthye. Joining them are David Krumholtz as Supergirl's father Zor-El, Emily Beecham as her mother, and Jason Momoa, who has been recast in the DC universe as the notorious Lobo.
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow marks the second film in the newly rebooted DC universe, following James Gunn's Superman, which is slated for release this summer. Other projects in development include The Batman Part II (which may or may not connect to Gunn's broader cinematic universe) and a rumored Clayface movie from director Mike Flanagan.
