Kojima Aims to Direct Film After Completing PlayStation Game Physint in 5-6 Years
Hideo Kojima's highly anticipated spiritual successor to Metal Gear, titled Physint, is still approximately "another five or six years" from release.
This timeline was confirmed directly by Kojima in a recent interview with Le Film Francais, where he revealed that his ambitions to direct a film remain on hold until after the completion of his first independent "action espionage" game since his well-documented departure from Konami in 2015.
"I've received many offers since leaving Konami—serious proposals for developing games through my independent studio," Kojima explained, as translated by ResetEra user Red Kong XIX. "Besides Death Stranding 2, we're also working on Physint, which will take another five or six years to complete.
"Perhaps only after that will I consider taking on a film project," he continued. "Cinema has been a huge part of my life since childhood. In a way, directing a movie would be a tribute to that passion. Plus, let’s face it—I'm not getting any younger, and I’d like to do this while I’m still young enough to enjoy it."
Physint was officially announced by PlayStation Studios head Herman Hulst back in January 2024, though details have remained minimal since then. At the time of its reveal, Kojima hinted that the project might also take the form of a movie. However, he later clarified on X (formerly Twitter) that while the experience itself won’t be a traditional film, “the look, story, theme, cast, acting, fashion, sound, etc… are all at the next level of ‘Digital Entertainment’ that could be called a ‘movie.’”
Kojima and his team are currently juggling multiple projects beyond Physint, including Death Stranding 2 and OD, a brand-new IP developed in collaboration with Xbox Game Studios and featuring creative contributions from actress Hunter Schafer and filmmaker Jordan Peele. Additionally, Kojima is consulting on A24's upcoming film adaptation of the original Death Stranding.
Speaking of which, Death Stranding 2: On The Beach is set to launch on June 26, and series star Norman Reedus recently hinted at his potential involvement in the film adaptation, telling IGN that "of course" he would play himself in the movie.
In other Kojima news, the legendary game designer recently shared insights into some of his abandoned concepts, including a unique idea for a “Forgetting Game” where players lose abilities and key knowledge if they take an extended break from playing. He even revealed that he left a USB stick filled with unreleased game ideas for his staff to explore after his passing—a final gift of creative inspiration from one of gaming’s most visionary minds.
