Larian Studios Shifts Focus to New Game, Enters 'Media Blackout'
Following the monumental success of *Baldur’s Gate 3*, developer Larian Studios has officially announced that its full attention is now dedicated to its next ambitious project. With Swen Vincke, CEO and creative visionary behind the studio, hinting at a bold new direction, fans are left eager yet in the dark about what comes next.
During a recent Twitter post, Vincke took a moment to reflect on the incredible journey that led to *Baldur’s Gate 3* becoming one of the most celebrated RPGs in recent memory. “Got me all nostalgic – it really has been an incredible journey so far. But the story ain’t over yet,” he wrote, teasing that more exciting chapters are yet to come.
“Stay tuned. Going to try to skip the dark night of the soul moment though if you don't mind.”
In a follow-up statement provided to VideoGamer, Larian confirmed that both Vincke and the wider team have shifted their focus entirely toward this new title. As part of this transition, the studio will be entering a “media blackout” for the foreseeable future — meaning fewer updates, interviews, and public insights as development ramps up.
While details remain scarce, we do know what the next game is not. It won’t be a sequel to *Baldur’s Gate 3*, nor will it be based on the Dungeons & Dragons universe. Instead, it will be a completely original title — a fresh start that the studio felt was necessary after internally exploring but ultimately deciding against pursuing another entry in the *Baldur’s Gate* series.
Vincke previously teased the project back in November 2023, when asked about Larian’s plans following *Baldur’s Gate 3*'s numerous Game Awards nominations. “I wish I could tell you about our next big game, but this is really encouraging us to ensure it pushes many boundaries,” he said. “I’m very excited about it.”
Although a return to the *Divinity: Original Sin* universe remains on Larian’s radar, Vincke clarified that it wouldn’t be the immediate next step. Speaking with IGN in July 2023, he noted that while the team would eventually revisit their beloved IP, they first needed time to recharge creatively after pouring everything into *Baldur’s Gate 3*. “We’ll take a break because we need to refresh ourselves,” he explained. “You’re seeing 400 developers putting their heart and souls into this. You’re getting the best of them and their craft into this game. And so I can tell you, it's quite a thing.”
So what could Larian’s next game be? A sci-fi epic? A modern-day thriller? Or perhaps even a departure from the RPG genre altogether? While speculation runs wild, one thing is certain: whatever Larian creates next will aim to redefine expectations. Of course, knowing the studio’s track record, it may be years before the world gets a proper glimpse — but when it does, it’ll almost certainly be worth the wait.
