Marathon Arrives September 23
The Return to Tau Ceti

The creators of Destiny and Halo unveiled Marathon's gameplay during their April 13 showcase. This competitive extraction shooter pits six teams of three players against each other and AI enemies in intense loot-gathering missions.
This represents a dramatic shift from the original Marathon trilogy released between 1994-1996, which featured single-player, narrative-driven gameplay.

In an April 12 PlayStation.Blog post, Bungie developers outlined their vision for Marathon. Narrative Lead Jonathan Goff emphasized maintaining Bungie's signature storytelling approach despite the multiplayer focus.
"We're preserving the trilogy's spirit of discovery and rich worldbuilding," Goff stated. "Our objective isn't simply storytelling - it's crafting immersive worlds where countless unique stories can emerge."
Crafting a Living Story Platform

The showcase revealed Marathon's robust economic systems, with all inventory items having defined values. However, Game Director Joe Ziegler clarified to PC Gamer that the experience transcends mere wealth accumulation.
"We're creating memorable adventures where even unsuccessful runs yield great stories," Ziegler explained. "Some of gaming's most memorable moments come from spectacular failures or unexpected situations."
Community-Driven Development

Bungie has involved creators and fans throughout Marathon's development. Early tester feedback led to significant gameplay refinements.
"Players reported issues with fairness and predictability," Ziegler recalled. "We implemented fresh starts for each match to ensure balanced competition."
Marathon Closed Alpha Details

The regional Alpha Playtest runs April 23-May 4 for U.S. and Canadian players. Four distinct character classes will be available:
- Blackbird (Warlock-style)
- Void (Stealth specialist)
- Locus (Defense-oriented)
- Glitch (High mobility)
Participants can explore three combat zones including forested Perimeter and expansive Dire Marsh.

Interested players can register through Marathon's Discord server using the "/alpha" command. Note that invitations are limited for this initial public test.
Marathon launches September 23, 2025 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
