Mortal Kombat 1 Dev Chief Ed Boon Teases T-1000 Fatality and ‘Future DLC’
Mortal Kombat 1's Ed Boon Hints at Future DLC Following T-1000 Reveal
Ed Boon, creative director of Mortal Kombat 1, recently shared a sneak peek of the upcoming T-1000 Terminator's Fatality on social media, simultaneously teasing future downloadable content (DLC). This follows the release of the Conan the Barbarian guest character and the announcement that Mortal Kombat 1 has surpassed five million copies sold.
Boon tweeted a short video showcasing a particularly brutal T-1000 Fatality, reminiscent of the iconic Terminator 2 chase scene featuring the T-1000 driving a wrecked truck. The accompanying tweet, "With Conan getting into player’s hands, we are excited to keep trucking forward with future DLC!", sparked considerable speculation within the Mortal Kombat community.
While the phrase could simply refer to the imminent release of the T-1000, many fans interpret it as a hint towards additional DLC characters beyond the current Khaos Reigns expansion. This expansion includes Cyrax, Sektor, Noob Saibot, Ghostface, and Conan the Barbarian, with the T-1000 being the final addition.
The possibility of a third DLC character pack or "Kombat Pack 3" has been a topic of much discussion, fueled by questions surrounding the game's sales performance. However, Warner Bros. Discovery, Mortal Kombat's parent company, has expressed continued confidence in the franchise, with CEO David Zaslav stating their intention to "double down" on only four game titles, including Mortal Kombat.
Adding to the intrigue, Boon previously mentioned that NetherRealm Studios had already decided on their next project three years prior, while assuring fans of continued support for Mortal Kombat 1. Many speculate that this next project will be a third installment in the Injustice fighting game series, though this remains unconfirmed by NetherRealm or Warner Bros.
Boon previously explained the decision to release another Mortal Kombat game before Injustice, citing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the transition to a newer Unreal Engine (Unreal Engine 4 for Mortal Kombat 1, compared to Unreal Engine 3 for Mortal Kombat 11) as significant factors. He explicitly confirmed, however, that the Injustice franchise is not abandoned.
The T-1000's release as the final Khaos Reigns character leaves the door open for further DLC, potentially hinting at a future Kombat Pack 3 or even more surprises down the line. The future of both Mortal Kombat and the Injustice franchise remains excitingly uncertain.
