Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons: A Potential Computer Mouse Mode?

Emerging circumstantial evidence suggests the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons might offer a surprising new function: computer mouse-like control. While the likelihood of widespread developer adoption remains uncertain, this potential feature aligns with Nintendo's history of innovative experimentation.

The evidence originates from Famiboards user LiC, who previously accessed Vietnamese customs data related to a suspected Nintendo parts supplier. This data source has fueled numerous Switch 2 rumors since mid-2024.

In early January 2025, LiC revealed further findings: customs manifests mentioning polyethylene (PE) adhesive tape described as "for game console handles," but labeled as "mouse soles." This terminology, typically used for the bottom of computer mice, strongly hints at potential mouse functionality for the Switch 2 Joy-Cons.

LiC uncovered two "mouse sole" model numbers: LG7 and SML7. These designations haven't been found in public component databases, suggesting they are new, unreleased products. The listed size, 90 x 90mm, is large enough to cover the entire back of the Joy-Cons, likely requiring trimming during assembly.

Not a First for Handhelds

While novel for Nintendo, a mouse-like controller mode isn't unprecedented. The Lenovo Legion GO, released in 2023, already incorporates this feature in its right controller, which transforms into a mouse when rotated. Lenovo even includes a plastic slider for improved surface control.

The Legion GO also features magnetic controller rails, another rumored Switch 2 characteristic. These similarities might offer a preview of Nintendo's hybrid console evolution.
