Sega Arcade Racer OutRun Gets Surprise Movie Adaptation From Transformers Director Michael Bay and Madame Web Star Sydney Sweeney
Sega's iconic arcade racing game, OutRun, is set to hit the big screen in a surprising movie adaptation, with Michael Bay, known for directing the Transformers series, at the helm. Sydney Sweeney, a rising star in Hollywood, is also on board as a producer. The Hollywood Reporter announced that Universal Pictures has tapped Bay to direct and produce the film, with Jayson Rothwell penning the screenplay. While plot details remain under wraps and no release date has been set, the project is generating buzz among fans and industry insiders alike.
On the Sega front, Toru Nakahara, who played a key role in the successful Sonic movies, will serve as a producer. Shuji Utsumi, CEO of Sega America and Europe, will oversee the film, ensuring that the essence of the beloved game is captured on screen. OutRun, originally launched in 1986, was a groundbreaking arcade driving game designed by the legendary Yu Suzuki. Over the years, it has seen various versions and ports, with the last major release being OutRun Online Arcade by Sumo Digital in 2009.
Sega has been actively revisiting its extensive back catalog, with new titles in development for Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Golden Axe, Virtua Fighter, and Shinobi. Additionally, Sega has been successful in adapting its intellectual properties for other media, with the Sonic movies achieving significant popularity and the Like a Dragon: Yakuza series making its mark on Amazon last year. The demand for video game adaptations continues to grow, as evidenced by the record-breaking success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie and the recent release of A Minecraft Movie.
As for the OutRun movie, fans speculate that Michael Bay and Sydney Sweeney might be envisioning a high-octane, action-packed film reminiscent of the Fast & Furious franchise, given Bay's signature style and the game's focus on thrilling drives.
