Silksong Speculations Rage (Again) Because of a Cake
Hollow Knight fans are abuzz with speculation that Hollow Knight: Silksong will be announced for the Nintendo Switch 2 during the April 2nd Nintendo Direct. Let's delve into the reasons behind this latest wave of excitement.
Hollow Knight Fans' Renewed Hope for Silksong
A Twitter Post and a Piece of Cake
The speculation fire was ignited by a series of events involving William Pellen, one of the game's creators, on Twitter (now X). On January 15th, Pellen cryptically tweeted, "something big is coming. keep your eyes closed tomorrow," a seemingly clear reference to the leaked January 16th Switch 2 reveal. The usual Silksong release questions followed, but Pellen's next move truly fueled the flames.
On January 16th, 2025, following the Switch 2 announcement and the reveal of an upcoming April 2nd Direct, Pellen changed his profile picture to a slice of cake. A reverse image search revealed the image belonged to a Bon Appetit article featuring a Brooklyn Blackout Cake recipe, published on April 2nd, 2024.
Pellen also commented on the article with "mmmm tasty," prompting dedicated fans to scrutinize the cake-related comments. One fan even wagered, "if we get real silksong news by April 2nd 2025, I will bake this cake," while another playfully remarked, "Loved the silky texture. This goes directly in my favourite recipes," cleverly linking the game to Nintendo's upcoming Direct.
It's important to note that there's no definitive proof Pellen authored the cake recipe comments. However, the profile picture change is undeniable, hinting at something – though that something might ultimately be nothing.
Hollow Knight: Silksong's Long-Awaited Announcement
Hollow Knight: Silksong was initially announced on February 14th, 2019, slated for release on Nintendo Switch, PS5, PS4, PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. This highly anticipated sequel follows Hornet's adventures in a new kingdom.
Following a December 2019 soundtrack preview by composer Christopher Larkin, Team Cherry went largely silent for over two years. They broke their silence in February 2022, reassuring fans of the game's continued development and promising updates closer to release. A June 2022 trailer during the Xbox and Bethesda Showcase offered new gameplay footage and confirmed a Game Pass launch.
While initially anticipated for release in the first half of 2023, Team Cherry representative Matthew Griffin confirmed a delay in May 2023, explaining, "We had planned to release in the 1st half of 2023, but development is still continuing...We're excited by how the game is shaping up, and it's gotten quite big, so we want to take the time to make the game as good as we can."
Over five years later, the Hollow Knight fanbase remains incredibly passionate, actively searching for any news. However, concrete information beyond the ongoing development has remained scarce since the delay announcement.
