Spider-Man 2 came out on PC and was hacked within an hour
Marvel's Spider-Man 2 launched on Steam and the Epic Games Store without any pre-order or pre-download option, resulting in a massive 140GB download size and a surprising lack of initial anti-piracy measures. This absence of protection proved short-lived; within an hour of release, hackers had acquired and cracked the game, highlighting the relatively simple security implemented.
Sony's understated marketing campaign, coupled with system requirements revealed only a day prior to launch, further contributed to this vulnerability. Despite this, Spider-Man 2 has already secured a notable seventh position among Sony's top Steam releases, trailing behind titles like God of War, Horizon, and Days Gone.
Initial player reception, however, is less than stellar. With 55% positive reviews based on over 1,280 user opinions at the time of writing, optimization issues, crashes, and bugs are frequently cited. This contrasts sharply with the continued success of Spider-Man Remastered on PC, which previously boasted over 66,000 concurrent players. Whether Spider-Man 2 can achieve similar heights remains to be seen, though its current sales trajectory suggests a potentially strong performance over the weekend.
