Splitgate 2: A New Era of Portal Combat Arrives in 2025

1047 Games, the creators of the wildly popular "Halo meets Portal" shooter, Splitgate, have announced a sequel launching in 2025. This isn't just an update; it's a complete reimagining built from the ground up.

A Familiar Feeling, a Fresh Experience

Revealed with a cinematic trailer on July 18th, Splitgate 2 promises a decade-long lifespan. CEO Ian Proulx explains the shift from a classic arena shooter inspiration to a focus on building "a deep and satisfying gameplay loop" for modern gaming longevity. Hilary Goldstein, Head of Marketing, adds that portal mechanics have been refined, aiming for a balance between rewarding skilled players and avoiding mandatory portal usage for success.

Developed in Unreal Engine 5, Splitgate 2 will remain free-to-play and introduce a faction system. While core elements remain, the developers assure players that the sequel will offer a completely refreshed visual and gameplay experience. It's slated for release in 2025 on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One.

The original Splitgate, known for its unique portal-based arena combat, exploded in popularity after its demo release, garnering 600,000 downloads in a single month. The game's success led to server capacity upgrades, and after a period in early access, it officially launched on September 15, 2022. Development ceased on the original to focus on creating Splitgate 2, a game promising "revolutionary" changes.

New Factions, Maps, and More

The trailer showcases the Sol Splitgate League and three distinct factions: Aeros (dash-based mobility), Meridian (tactical time manipulation), and Sabrask (brute force). These factions add strategic depth without transforming Splitgate 2 into a hero shooter like Overwatch or Valorant.

While detailed gameplay will be shown at Gamescom 2024 (August 21-25), the trailer offers a glimpse of new maps, weapons, and the return of dual-wielding.

No Single-Player, but a Rich Lore

Splitgate 2 will not feature a single-player campaign. However, a mobile companion app will offer comics, character cards, and a faction quiz to deepen player engagement with the game's lore.
