"Avowed Sequel/DLC Hinted by Obsidian and Microsoft Due to Strong Sales"
The director of Avowed has hinted at exciting plans for the franchise following its successful release. Dive in to discover more about the potential for an expansion or sequel, as well as other upcoming projects from the studio.
Avowed Director Wants To Expand The World They've Built
Possibility of Expansions or Sequels
Avowed's launch has been a hit, with both Microsoft and Obsidian expressing satisfaction with its sales figures. In a recent interview with Bloomberg on February 22, 2025, Avowed Game Director Carrie Patel discussed the prospects of expanding the game's universe.
While no concrete plans have been announced by Obsidian, Patel is eager to continue her work in game development. She expressed enthusiasm for potential expansions and sequels, noting, "Now that we’ve built this wonderful world, and also built this team strength and muscle memory around the content and gameplay in this world, I’d love to see us do more with it."
Changes in Avowed During Development
The journey to Avowed's final form was fraught with challenges and shifts in direction. Patel described the development process as "messy" but ultimately rewarding.
Initially started in 2018, the project faced hurdles as Obsidian navigated the complexities of independence before being acquired by Microsoft in 2020. This acquisition led to the game's official announcement, but not before the team had to drop several planned features, including multiplayer elements. A leadership change in January 2021 prompted a reboot of the project under Patel's guidance.
Managing a team of over 80 during this reevaluation was no small feat. Patel explained, "Normally if you’re stepping back and reevaluating your creative direction, putting together a new vertical slice and revised production plans, you would do that with a very small team." Her vision led the team to focus on enriching the story and lore from the Pillars of Eternity franchise, while shifting from an open world to more defined zones, which allowed for enhanced development of these areas.
Reflecting on the chaotic yet fruitful process, Patel observed, "There’s this interesting thing I’ve seen on every project I’ve worked on or seen during my time at the studio — things are messy, messy, messy, then they start coming together."
Obsidian's Interest in Pillars of Eternity Tactics
With Avowed bringing renewed attention to the Pillars of Eternity universe, Obsidian is exploring new avenues within the franchise. During a Twitch livestream on February 23, 2025, Josh Sawyer, director of Pillars of Eternity and Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire, shared the studio's interest in developing a tactics game titled Pillars: Tactics.
Sawyer noted, "Pillars: Tactics is a thing that a lot of people would like, a lot of people at the studio would like to work on; there are a lot of people who like tactics games." He highlighted the challenges involved, such as determining the scope, team size, visual quality, and overall scale of the project. The interest in a tactics game has been echoed by other developers, and Avowed's success might just pave the way for this vision to become reality.
However, Sawyer also expressed a desire to create Pillars of Eternity 3 with a substantial budget akin to that of Baldur’s Gate 3, which is significantly larger than what was allocated for Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire.
