Instead, it emerged directly from fan desires for a "Daddy Halsin" romance, as Welch explained in a Eurogamer interview. The initial concept focused on Halsin's struggle to maintain his human form during intense emotional moments, a concept organically developed from the fanfiction.

Welch emphasized the vital role fanfiction plays in maintaining a game's long-term community engagement, particularly for romance storylines.
