Captain America: Brave New World Nears $300M Globally Despite 68% Domestic Drop

Captain America: Brave New World is rapidly approaching a global box office total of $300 million, yet it faced a significant 68% drop in domestic earnings during its second weekend. This sharp decline could pose a challenge for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film in reaching its break-even point. According to Deadline, the movie, which boasts a production budget of $180 million, needs to surpass $425 million to break even.

The film, led by Anthony Mackie, exceeded initial projections by earning $100 million domestically over the Presidents Day weekend. However, its second weekend saw a domestic haul of only $28.2 million, mirroring the steep drop experienced by 2023's Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which ultimately failed to break even.

According to Comscore figures, Captain America: Brave New World has now amassed an estimated $289.4 million worldwide, with $141.2 million from the domestic market and $148.2 million internationally after just two weekends. The movie brought in $63.5 million globally during its second weekend.

Despite being the biggest release of 2025 so far, the film's substantial second-weekend drop was unexpected, especially given the absence of competing blockbusters on the horizon. Senior Comscore analyst Paul Dergarabedian remarked to Variety, "This is the new normal for Marvel movies. There's still no denying these movies have appeal. But a second weekend drop of 68% reflects less audience enthusiasm than you'd expect from Marvel."

Deadline predicts that Captain America: Brave New World will ultimately reach about $450 million at the global box office.

The film launched amidst lukewarm reviews, with IGN's Captain America: Brave New World review awarding it a modest 5/10. The review criticized the movie, stating, "Captain America: Brave New World feels neither brave, nor all that new, falling short of strong performances from Anthony Mackie, Harrison Ford, and Carl Lumbly."

Marvel Studios and its parent company Disney are now banking on Captain America: Brave New World to regain momentum and help reverse a downward trend for MCU films. This is crucial as they look forward to upcoming releases such as Thunderbolts* in May and The Fantastic Four: First Steps in July, especially following the success of last year's Deadpool & Wolverine.
