"Dune: Awakening Devs Detail Sandworm Dynamics"

Author : Joseph Update : Apr 13,2025

In *Dune: Awakening*, sandworms will play a unique role as a natural force within the game's ecosystem, rather than as controllable tools at the players' disposal. Unlike the narrative in Frank Herbert's original novels, where characters could summon these massive creatures using a device known as a thumper, this feature won't be available in the game.

The developers have designed sandworms as non-player characters (NPCs) with their own distinct patrol routes, schedules, and behaviors integrated into the game engine. Players won't have the ability to call a sandworm near an enemy base to disrupt their strategies. However, if a sandworm is already in the vicinity, players might attract its attention by actively moving through the sand or using a thumper. These actions, though, do not ensure the worm's presence in the area.

The iconic act of riding sandworms, deeply rooted in Herbert's books and emblematic of the Fremen culture, will not be featured in *Dune: Awakening*. The developers have mentioned that pressure from the filmmakers behind the Dune cinematic universe led to the exclusion of this mechanic. However, they have hinted that future post-launch updates could introduce more elements of Fremen culture, including the possibility of worm-riding. As of now, there's no assurance that players will get to engage in this cherished activity.

*Dune: Awakening* is set to launch on PC on May 20th, with console versions to follow later.
