In a recent interview with Famitsu, ahead of the PC port launch of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, series producer Yoshinori Kitase and Rebirth's game director Naoki Hamaguchi confirmed that the third installment's development is progressing smoothly. They proudly announced that the story for Part 3 is already complete.
Hamaguchi shared, "We began working on the third title immediately after concluding the development of FF7 Rebirth. We are progressing without any delay from our initial schedule, so fans can look forward to a timely release."
Kitase added that the main scenario for the third game was completed even before the PlayStation 5 release of FF7 Rebirth in February 2024. "We've been polishing it since then, and I'm delighted to confirm that it is now definitively complete. Tetsuya Nomura, the creative director, took on the challenge of concluding the remake project while respecting the original and providing a satisfying end that wasn't felt in the original. That work was completed by the end of the year, ensuring a fulfilling conclusion to the trilogy."
Team Admits That They Were Worried About Rebirth’s Release At First
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, released in early 2024, was met with widespread acclaim and positive feedback from critics, fans, and gamers around the world. Despite this success, the development team initially had concerns about how the game would be received.
Kitase confessed to Famitsu, "I was worried about how it would resonate with players and game fans because it was a remake and the second in a trilogy. However, the overwhelmingly positive reviews we received alleviated those concerns." Hamaguchi echoed this sentiment, stating, "The positive feedback has boosted our confidence and created an excellent atmosphere for the third installment."
Hamaguchi's "logic-based approach" has been crucial in shaping the game's compelling storyline and engaging gameplay. In an interview with Automaton, he explained, "If our goal is A, and we get an opinion like 'I want B instead,' we can’t do anything about it as it is just someone’s preference. However, if we get an opinion like 'If you added B too, wouldn’t it be even better?' then I’ll think about incorporating it, if possible."
PC Gaming Is Now The Norm
The interview also touched on the growing trend of PC gaming. Kitase noted that with rising development costs, reaching a broader market is essential. "PCs and laptops are ubiquitous worldwide, unlike mainstream consoles, which may not be available in certain regions due to policies. There are no borders with PCs, making it inevitable for us to release PC versions to allow more people to play."
Hamaguchi mentioned that the team focused on quickly porting FF7 Rebirth to PC, acknowledging the shift in gaming trends. "The flow of game users has changed significantly, so we made sure to shorten the time it took to release the PC version of FFVII Rebirth compared to FFVII Remake."
Given the experiences from the first two releases, fans can anticipate a thrilling conclusion to the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy. With the potential for a faster PC release, the full Remake Project experience will soon be accessible to fans worldwide.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is now available on PC via Steam and on its original console, the PlayStation 5. If you haven't yet embarked on this epic journey with Cloud and his allies, the first installment, Final Fantasy 7 Remake, is available on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and PC via Steam.
