The Marvel Cinematic Universe revolutionized entertainment with its interconnected films and TV shows, creating a cohesive narrative universe. Yet Marvel's video games exist in isolated worlds - Insomniac's Spider-Man series shares no connection with Eidos-Montreal's Guardians of the Galaxy, nor with upcoming titles like Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra or Marvel's Blade.
However, Disney once explored creating a Marvel Gaming Universe (MGU) to mirror the MCU's success in gaming. So what derailed this ambitious plan?
During The Fourth Curtain podcast, former Bungie founder and Disney games executive Alexander Seropian, alongside veteran Marvel writer Alex Irvine, revealed the untold story of this abandoned initiative.
"There was this vision of a Marvel gaming universe that would function like the MCU," Irvine recalled about his early Marvel gaming work. Seropian confirmed this was his personal initiative during his Disney tenure, created before the MCU's dominance, that ultimately failed to secure corporate funding.
Irvine, whose credits include Marvel Rivals and the groundbreaking Halo ARG I Love Bees, described their ambitious plans: "We envisioned interactive hubs connecting games, crossover comics, and original content moving players between experiences." He believes the concept's complexity may have deterred Disney executives.
This scrapped MGU leaves us wondering about alternative gaming realities - where Insomniac's Spider-Man might have teamed up with Square Enix's Avengers characters, building toward massive crossover events.
With Marvel's Wolverine in development, questions arise about potential connections to Insomniac's Spider-Man universe. While the MGU remains a fascinating "what if," perhaps we'll see organic connections emerge between future Marvel titles.
