Magic: The Gathering Cinematic Universe Announced
Hasbro has revealed its ambitious plans to expand the world of Magic: The Gathering beyond the tabletop and into the realms of film and television. In a partnership with Legendary Entertainment, the company aims to create a cohesive Magic: The Gathering universe that will captivate audiences on screens everywhere. The initial focus will be on developing a feature film, setting the stage for a broader cinematic and TV universe.
"We pride ourselves on being thoughtful caretakers of singular, beloved IP, and no property better fits that description than Magic: The Gathering," stated Legendary’s chairman of worldwide production. Legendary Entertainment, known for its work on films such as Dune, Godzilla vs. Kong, and Detective Pikachu, is poised to bring the rich lore and intricate world of Magic: The Gathering to life.
While details are still emerging, it appears that the movie and TV projects at Legendary will be separate from the previously announced Magic: The Gathering animated series set to air on Netflix. However, there is a possibility that the plans have evolved, and the animated series might now be integrated into this expansive shared universe.
Magic: The Gathering, a card game that debuted in 1993, was created by Wizards of the Coast and has since become one of the most popular trading card games globally. Wizards of the Coast joined the Hasbro family in 1999, bolstering Hasbro's portfolio of iconic games and toys.
Hasbro has a history of successfully adapting its products for the screen, with franchises like G.I. Joe, Transformers, and Dungeons and Dragons already making their mark in cinemas. The company is currently working on several new projects, including additional G.I. Joe films, a new Power Rangers movie, and a Beyblade film, showcasing its commitment to bringing its beloved brands to new audiences through multimedia storytelling.
