Team Fortress 2 Modders Rejoice as Valve Releases Full Client and Server Game Code

Author : Isaac Update : Feb 28,2025

Valve unleashes a monumental Source SDK update, granting full access to Team Fortress 2's client and server code!

This groundbreaking update empowers players to craft entirely new games using TF2's source code. Unlike Steam Workshop or standard modding, this release allows for extensive modifications, expansions, and even complete rewrites of Team Fortress 2.

While commercialization is prohibited – all creations must remain free and non-commercial – the resulting mods and spin-off games can be published on the Steam Store, appearing as independent entries within Steam's game library.

In a blog post, Valve emphasized the community's significant contributions to TF2, stating: "Players have heavily invested in their TF2 inventories, and the Steam Workshop showcases a wealth of community-created content. The majority of in-game items are a testament to the TF2 community's dedication." They urged modders to respect this investment and refrain from creating mods designed to profit from the Workshop contributors' work. Ideally, Valve hopes mods will maintain compatibility with players' existing TF2 inventories.

This expansive update also extends to Valve's back-catalog of multiplayer Source engine titles, introducing 64-bit binary support, scalable HUD/UI, prediction fixes, and numerous other enhancements across TF2, DoD:S, HL2:DM, CS:S, and HLDM:S.

Recall that December marked the conclusion of the long-running Team Fortress 2 comic series with its seventh and final installment. These comics served not only as a rich source of lore and character development but also highlighted Valve's enduring commitment to one of its flagship franchises.
