Annapurna Game Studio Mass Departure Raises Questions on Future
Annapurna Interactive's Entire Game Division Resigns, Casting Doubt on the Future
A mass resignation has shaken Annapurna Interactive, the video game publishing arm of Annapurna Pictures. The entire staff, reportedly over 20 employees, resigned following failed negotiations with parent company Annapurna Pictures.
The Fallout at Annapurna Interactive
The publisher, known for titles like Stray and What Remains of Edith Finch, is facing significant upheaval. The staff, led by former president Nathan Gary, proposed establishing Annapurna Interactive as an independent entity. However, these negotiations ultimately failed, leading to the mass resignation.
According to Bloomberg, Gary confirmed the collective resignation of all 25 team members, stating it was a difficult but necessary decision.
Annapurna Pictures' Megan Ellison assured partners of their continued commitment to existing projects and expansion in interactive entertainment, stating a desire for more integrated storytelling across various media.
The situation leaves numerous indie developers who partnered with Annapurna in uncertain territory, scrambling to confirm ongoing agreements. Remedy Entertainment, involved with Control 2, clarified that their agreement is with Annapurna Pictures and that they are self-publishing Control 2.
Annapurna Interactive has appointed Hector Sanchez, a co-founder, as the new president. Sources suggest Sanchez intends to honor existing contracts and replace departing staff. This follows a broader restructuring announced over a week prior, including the departure of Deborah Mars and Nathan Vella alongside Gary.
