Apex Legends Isn’t Doing the Business for EA, So It’s Making Apex Legends 2.0 to Come Out After Battlefield
EA Announces Apex Legends 2.0 to Revitalize Underperforming Battle Royale
As Apex Legends approaches its sixth anniversary, Electronic Arts (EA) has acknowledged the game's underperformance in terms of revenue, despite maintaining a substantial player base. During a recent earnings call, EA CEO Andrew Wilson revealed plans for a significant overhaul, dubbed "Apex Legends 2.0."
While Apex Legends boasts over 200 million players and remains a popular title, Wilson stated that its current trajectory isn't meeting EA's financial expectations. He emphasized the company's ongoing commitment to the existing community through content updates, quality-of-life improvements, and anti-cheat measures. However, he admitted that these efforts haven't yielded the desired results.
Apex Legends 2.0 is envisioned as a major update designed to reinvigorate the franchise, attract new players, and ultimately boost revenue. The release is strategically planned for after the launch of the next Battlefield title, likely sometime in EA's 2027 fiscal year (ending March 2027).
Wilson clarified that Apex Legends 2.0 won't be the final iteration of the game. EA intends to continue supporting the franchise for years to come, expanding its appeal to both existing competitive players and new audiences. This long-term vision reflects EA's successful track record in building enduring franchises.
The planned overhaul draws parallels to Activision's 2022 reboot of Call of Duty's Warzone 2.0. While the success of that approach remains debated, EA will undoubtedly learn from its competitors' experiences in the competitive battle royale market.
Despite its current financial struggles, Apex Legends maintains a strong position on Steam's concurrent player count rankings. However, its player numbers have significantly decreased from their peak, and the game is currently on a path to record lows. This underscores the urgency behind EA's plans for Apex Legends 2.0.
