Halo Infinite Studio Scraps Debut Game Project
Jar of Sparks, NetEase-Backed Studio, Pauses Development on First Game
Jerry Hook, former design lead for Halo Infinite, announced that his studio, Jar of Sparks, has temporarily halted development on its debut project. The studio, established in 2022 under the NetEase umbrella, was aiming to create a "next-generation narrative-driven action game." However, the team is now actively seeking a new publishing partner to realize its creative vision.
Hook's LinkedIn post confirmed the development pause, emphasizing the studio's commitment to finding a partner capable of supporting their ambitious goals. He expressed pride in the team's innovative work and bold creative risks. While layoffs weren't explicitly stated, a subsequent post indicated the studio would assist team members in finding new roles in the coming weeks as the first project concludes.
NetEase, a prominent global gaming company, currently supports live-service titles such as Once Human and the recently launched Marvel Rivals. The latter's successful launch and upcoming content updates, including the addition of the Fantastic Four, highlight NetEase's continued investment in live-service gaming.
This isn't the first instance of a veteran game developer forming a new studio with NetEase. Hiroyuki Kobayashi, a former Resident Evil producer, established GPTRACK50 Studios under NetEase in 2022.
The pause in Jar of Sparks' development comes amidst a period of transition for the Halo franchise, Hook's previous employer. Halo Infinite's post-launch challenges and mixed reception of the Paramount+ series have been well-documented. However, 343 Industries' rebranding to Halo Studios and the shift to Unreal Engine suggest a potential resurgence for the franchise.

The future of Jar of Sparks and its innovative project remains uncertain, pending the identification of a suitable publishing partner. The team's commitment to delivering a unique and exciting gaming experience, however, remains steadfast.
