Elden Ring: Nightreign Omits Fan-Favorite FromSoftware Feature
Elden Ring Nightreign: No In-Game Messaging System
FromSoftware has confirmed that Elden Ring Nightreign will not feature an in-game messaging system, a staple of the Soulsborne series. This decision, according to game director Junya Ishizaki, is a practical one. The anticipated shorter gameplay sessions (around 40 minutes) in Nightreign's multiplayer-focused design leave insufficient time for players to read and write messages.
The asynchronous messaging system, a key component of player interaction and engagement in previous titles, will be absent. While used for helpful tips, playful misdirection, or humorous commentary, the fast-paced nature of Nightreign necessitates a streamlined experience.
Preserving Asynchronous Features
Despite the omission of the messaging system, FromSoftware intends to retain and enhance other asynchronous features. The bloodstain mechanic will return, improved to allow players to not only witness but also loot the ghosts of fallen comrades. This reinforces the game's intense, multiplayer-driven focus.
A "Compressed" RPG Experience
FromSoftware aims to create a "compressed RPG" in Nightreign, characterized by consistent intensity, diverse gameplay, and minimal downtime. The three-day game structure reflects this goal. The lack of an in-game messaging system contributes to this streamlined, fast-paced experience.
Nightreign is slated for a 2025 release, as revealed at TGA 2024, though a precise release date remains unannounced.
