MH Wilds Beta Test Extension Considered After Sudden PSN Outage

Following a recent PlayStation Network outage, Monster Hunter Wilds is exploring the possibility of extending its Open Beta Test 2 by 24 hours. Discover more about the proposed extension and the circumstances that prompted it in the details below.

Monster Hunter Wilds May Extend Beta Test 2

PS5 Players Experienced 24-Hour Disruption

Due to a PlayStation Network outage over the weekend, Monster Hunter Wilds is considering a one-day extension for Open Beta Test 2. The service disruption began at 6 PM EST on February 7th and lasted approximately 24 hours, preventing access to all online console games—including the Monster Hunter Wilds beta. PlayStation Network services were reinstated around 8 PM EST, as confirmed by the official North American X (formerly Twitter) support account.

While the specific timing for the extension remains unconfirmed, developers have assured players it will last 24 hours to compensate for lost gameplay. This extension may take place anytime between the conclusion of Beta Test 2 Part 2 and February 27th—just one day before the game officially launches. Meanwhile, Part 1 of Beta Test 2 has ended, with Part 2 scheduled to resume later this week on February 13th at 7 PM PT. Players can look forward to diving back into the action, and perhaps even spotting the amusing bug that transforms finely modeled characters and creatures into comical, low-poly models.

The Infamous Low-Poly Glitch Strikes Again

Capcom has clarified that the beta version is based on an older build and does not represent the final game's quality. Consequently, the beta contains various bugs and technical issues, including a well-known low-poly character glitch caused by texture loading failures. This glitch morphs hunters, Palico companions, and even iconic monsters into oddly blocky, simplified versions of their intended designs.

Rather than expressing frustration, the community has enthusiastically embraced these bizarre, polygonal figures, sharing their humorous encounters across social media. Some fans are even hoping that Wilds might eventually pay tribute to these quirky graphical mishaps in an official capacity. In an interview with GamesRadar+, the development team acknowledged the entertaining bug, noting their delight in seeing players enjoy the unexpected visual quirks. Still, they encourage everyone to experience the full, polished version of the game with the proper specifications upon its official release later this month.

Monster Hunter Wilds is the latest installment in the celebrated Monster Hunter franchise and the first mainline title to feature a vast open-world environment known as the Forbidden Lands. Players take on the role of a Hunter, entrusted with exploring this mysterious, uncharted territory and confronting its apex predator, the White Wraith. The highly anticipated action RPG is scheduled to launch on February 28th, 2025, for PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.

PlayStation Network’s Most Significant Outage in Years

In a post on its North American X support account, PlayStation described the lengthy outage as an "operational issue" and issued an apology for the inconvenience. As compensation, active PlayStation Plus members will receive an extra five days added to their current subscription.

However, many players expressed dissatisfaction with Sony’s communication during the outage, citing heightened anxiety and unwelcome parallels to a similar incident in 2011. The 2011 PlayStation Network outage resulted from a coordinated cyberattack, compromising approximately 77 million user accounts. Services remained offline for about three and a half weeks, from April 20th to May 14th. Throughout that period, Sony maintained regular communication with users, explaining the situation and outlining the need for a comprehensive investigation into the attack’s scope and impact.
