Doom: The Dark Ages Unveils New Gameplay Features
In a captivating interview with EDGE magazine, the developers behind the eagerly anticipated Doom: The Dark Ages unveiled exciting new details about the game's gameplay mechanics and narrative approach. This installment promises to place a greater emphasis on storytelling, while introducing the largest levels in the series' storied history, providing players with a sandbox-like experience that blends the best of both worlds.
Hugo Martin, the game director, and Marty Stratton, the studio head, shed light on what players can expect from this thrilling new chapter in the Doom saga. Unlike previous entries where the backstory was often tucked away in text logs, The Dark Ages will adopt a more direct storytelling method. The game's atmosphere will shift towards a medieval aesthetic, dialing back on futuristic elements. Even the iconic weapons will undergo a design transformation to seamlessly integrate with this new setting.

Continuing the tradition of distinct levels, Doom: The Dark Ages will feature the biggest maps yet, merging the thrill of dungeon crawling with the freedom of open-world exploration. The game's chapters are structured into "acts," beginning in constrained dungeons before opening up into vast, expansive areas. Adding an extra layer of excitement, players will have the unique opportunity to control both a dragon and a mech, bringing diverse gameplay dynamics to the table.
A novel addition to the Slayer's arsenal is a versatile shield that also functions as a chainsaw. This shield can be hurled at enemies and its impact varies depending on the material it strikes—be it flesh, armor, energy shields, or other substances. Moreover, the shield facilitates a dash attack, enabling swift movement across the battlefield. Given the absence of double jumps and roars from earlier games, this new mechanic will be pivotal for player mobility. The shield also introduces a parrying system, with customizable difficulty settings and precise timing windows to master.
Innovatively, parrying will serve as a "reload" mechanism for melee attacks, while engaging in melee combat will replenish ammunition for primary weapons, echoing the chainsaw mechanic from DOOM Eternal. Players will have a selection of melee options, including a swift gauntlet, a balanced shield, and a more deliberate mace, ensuring varied and dynamic combat experiences.
