CDPR's Triumph Over Open-World Storytelling in The Witcher 3: Behind the Scenes
In a fascinating revelation from a recent interview, Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz, the former lead quest designer of *The Witcher 3*, shared insights into CD Projekt Red's initial concerns about merging a grand narrative with an open-world setting. The team was apprehensive that the expansive storytelling typical of linear RPGs, like those seen in *The Witcher 2*, might not seamlessly integrate into the open-world format of *The Witcher 3*.

"Few games have dared to attempt what we did: blending expansive storytelling techniques, usually reserved for linear RPGs with corridor-like structures, such as The Witcher 2 and adapting them to fit an open-world experience," Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz
Despite these reservations, CDPR boldly ventured into uncharted territory. Their efforts culminated in the creation of *The Witcher 3*, now celebrated as one of the most acclaimed RPGs in gaming history. Today, Tomaszkiewicz heads the team at Rebel Wolves, where they are crafting *The Blood of Dawnwalker*. Set in an alternate medieval Eastern Europe infused with dark fantasy, this new game centers around vampires and promises a thrilling experience.
*The Blood of Dawnwalker* is currently in development for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series platforms. While an official release date remains undisclosed, fans can look forward to a gameplay reveal this summer, heightening anticipation for what promises to be another landmark title in the RPG genre.
